To support training at the fire services, we have, for the first time, produced short how-to videos to complement our written teaching materials. In this video, we demonstrate, in less than 20 minutes in total, best practices for typical operational procedures when tasked with a fire attack or search and rescue in road tunnels. A total of six videos are available in the «Knowledge» section of our website.
Taking on new roles for the videos
With these videos, we have broken new ground in terms of production. Marianne Wernli, our Head of Training, and Marco Nigg, our Product Manager, worked together to develop the scripts for the videos. The aim was to demonstrate best practice for firefighting operations in road tunnels clearly. It became apparent that activities such as hose management, vehicle searches, and rescues can be depicted very effectively in a staged setting. Markus Vogt was behind the camera, filming our instructors Andreas Schneider, Antonio Angelicchio, Pierre-Yves Jost, Remo Hecht and Thomas Luder as they carried out these activities, assisted by technician Lorenz Kohler.

The situation was different when it came to the procedures for structural cooling and firefighting, as well as searching the carriageway in tunnel tubes. These procedures are too complicated to be demonstrated quickly and clearly by simply showing them in all their key variations. We therefore decided to produce these videos as animations. At 3 minutes 48 seconds and 6 minutes 29 seconds respectively, they are the longest videos in this first series.
Showcasing what we teach in the training tunnels
The procedures demonstrated by our instructors or explained in our animated videos are in line with our Tunnel Firefighting Procedure. Just how these procedures are taught and practised in our course. We regard these procedures as recommendations; in real-world situations, it may be appropriate to deviate from the procedures shown, depending on circumstance.
Videos for operations in road tunnels
The first series comprises six videos for operations in road tunnels. The four conventionally shot films showcase the skills involved. Subtitles explain what to look out for. In both animated films, the procedure is shown step by step using illustrations.

The «Knowledge» section is being further expanded
With the release of our first videos, we have optimised the layout of our «Knowledge» section. Photos accompanied by brief descriptions of each item's content enable users to find their way around quickly. In addition to the videos, we continue to make our leaflets, educational posters, operational checklists and tabletop training materials available digitally as teaching resources.

Videos for operations in railway tunnels to follow
How-to videos are also planned on firefighting operations in railway tunnels. We are still in the early stages of production, which begins with selecting the storylines and then developing the scripts. As soon as the videos have been produced, we will make them available in the «Knowledge» section.
